Durga Puja is the most auspicious festival in India and is largely celebrated by Bengalis. But now this festival is being celebrated all parts of India. In Mumbai it is being celebrated for 9 days and is called as “Navratri”. In Mumbai it is largely played by Gujratis, where whole Gujrati community comes together and play “Dandiya”, and traditional dance of Gujratis.

The first day of Navratra is being dedicated to the worship of Shailputri, which is the first form of Durga.  The term Navratri is derived from Sanskrit word which means “Nine Nights”.  All this nine nights people come together to worship goddess Durga, Laxmi and Saraswati along with their other avatars. The tenth day of the Navratri ends with Dusshera, where all people meet each other by greeting “Happy Dusshera”.

Durga Puja in Mumbai is celebrated in high spirit as there are big orchestras played by big organization.   Many bollywood stars also join the celebration to make it more colorful and big. Places like Somayia ground, Mahalaxmi temple etc are some of the places where Navratri is being celebrated.  There is also Shivaji Park, Dadar, where the Bengali clubs every year hold the Durga celebration. Then there is Lokhnadwala Garden, Andheri, where lavish Durga puja is being celebrated and many Bollywood celebrities join this celebration.
Durga Puja celebration in Mumbai gets to see many big pandal which are made in a very elaborate manner. There are many pandals which puts up big statue of Durga with some unique kind of decorations. People from every corner of the city visit this pandals and take the blessing of Durga.

People in Mumbai celebrate Navratri wearing colorful dress, especially Gujrati people who wear their traditional cloth and play the “Dandiya Rass” which is played by dancing circular with group of people.

This nine day of Durga Puja which is also called as Navratri is makes Mumbai delightful and colorful.

Please do not get confused in Navaratri and Durgapuja. These 2 are different festivals and celebrated differently.
