Celebrating Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti is the festival that is celebrated in Sikh religion.  On this day, Sikh communities celebrate the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev. This day falls in the month of Karthik. This anniversary is also known as Gurupurabs and celebrated with great devotion. On this day, there is the great procession takes place taking along the idol of Guru Nanak’s. Five armed mens, who represents Panj Pyares, heads the procession carrying the flag Nishan Sahibs.
Whole Punjab celebrates this festival. People distribute sweets and langar to everyone whether the person belongs to Sikh community or not. Karseva is a community service that is participated by men, women and children. On this day cook foods are also distributed along with traditional Karah Prasad. During this festival, three days of AKhand path is conducted where Guru Granth Sahib is read for continuously. Local bands play their traditional music and people dance their traditional dance “Bhangra”.
On this day, Sikh family visit Gurudwaras where special programs are performed along with kirtans. All the Gurudwaras and houses are lighted up with colorful lights. Guru Nanak Dev was the great saint and a mystic guru for Sikh’s. He was great poet and was like a prophet for them. His universal message is still in the mind of people.
The Golden Temple, which is in Punjab, is lightened up and thousands of Sikh people visit on this day to take the blessings of Guru Nanak.  Guru Govind Dev is responsible for the creation of Sikh religion. He was a soldier saint who also taught that, “when all other means of rights are failed, it is righteous to use sword to get own right”.
Sikh from all over the world celebrates this festival with great pomp and belief. Guru Nanak passed away in 1539 and after him there follow of nine Gurus, whom people still follow.
